Wolfenstein 3D - Atari Jaguar
For the ten people out there who have never played this game, it involves
1) you running round with a series of increasingly large guns through 3D mazes
2) blowing holes in wave after wave of Nazis, Nazi Zombies, Nazi Mutants and Nazi dogs.
3) the end.
The "find hidden keys to open doors" mechanic is a bit tedious, but this game is ancient so we can't really blame them for that. What's surprising here is how quickly you can zip through the levels - I'm talking 3 or 4 minutes at most for a lot of them, and that's if you're taking your time about things. The levels are laid out in such a way that you always intuitively seem to know which way to go next, and opening up the map screen is usually kept to a minimum. The graphics are good (if a little blocky), the sound is serviceable and when you die the overall effect is pretty freakish (everything goes blood red, you hear an odd shriek and the camera spins round to show you your killer. Nice).
The cartridge has three save slots too, which is handy. However, the saves take you back to the start of the level you were on - not the point where you saved. Bare that in mind if you create a lot of saves, as you'll likely end up getting a bit confused as to which is which.
Even the title screen raises a chuckle (spinning globe with Hitlers head on it, overlaid by a gun sight).
Come on, that's awesome.
